Heartgard Plus, a combination of ivermectin and pyrantel, has been made the leading brand of heartworm preventative by veterinarians because of it's outstanding efficacy.

At present, it is impossible to purchase Heartgard without a prescription, therefore you need to talk to your dog's veterinarian before beginning treatment.

Heartgard Plus dog treatment comes in three dosages for different weights of dog.

The ranges are 0-25lbs, 26-50lbs, and 51-100lbs, and for each weight there are six-dose or 12-dose packs, providing the convenience of a half year or full year of treatment.

The weights each are named with a color, Blue for dogs 0 - 25lbs, Green for dogs 26-50lbs, Brown 51-100lbs.

This makes it easier for owners to recognize which package contains the correct dosage for their dog.

There is competition from at least one generic discount brand, but Heartgard remains the industry leader.

The monthly Heartgard Plus heartworm preventative medication can be given to puppies as young as six weeks of age and can also be safely used by very small dogs, breeding females and stud males.

For puppies under 6 months, they should be tested and given a clean bill of health for heartworm before being started on the preventative program.

Heartgard Plus chewables, in addition to protecting against heartworms, two species of roundworms, and three species of hookworms, are beef flavored to make giving them to your pet a much more agreeable process.

Dogs should be tested annually for heartworm at the vet clinic.

When you choose Heartgard for your dog, you can rest assured that incidence of allergic reaction and neurological malfunction to Heartgard is very low.

Heartgard Plus chewable are made by Merial, the same company who produces Frontline, Enacard, Recombitek, Imbrab and Oravet, so you will know that you are dealing with a reputable company.

Merial also uses no wheat gluten in the manufacture of Heartgard for dogs, so there is no risk of contamination, as with the recent wheat gluten scandals.

Beware of buying cheap Heartgard on the net unless you know your supplier very well.

Heartgard provides you with a method of reminding yourself when it is time for your dog's monthly dose.

Fortunately, this company realizes that fast paced modern life often makes it easy to forget to treat your dog. You can sign up to receive a monthly email reminder from the Heartgard website.
